Project: Fiona Stanley Hospital State Rehabilitation Service

Client: South Metropolitan Area Health Service (SMAHS)

Procurement: Two Stage Managing Contractor (Document and Construct)

Stage: Design (completion - late 2013)

The $255.7 million statewide rehabilitation service will be developed as part of the Fiona Stanley Hospital in the new health precinct at Murdoch. Funded by the Federal Government, the project consists of relocating the tertiary rehabilitation services currently provided at the Shenton Park campus into a new purpose-built facility which will benefit from being located adjacent to the new Fiona Stanley Hospital creating valuable synergies for patients. The 140 bed facility will provide a full range of tertiary services for inpatients and outpatients including health therapy services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, podiatry, speech pathology, psychology, social work and orthotics / prosthetics to people requiring rehabilitation treatment, such as those with spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries and those who require rehabilitative care after strokes, neurological diseases and amputations.

The State rehabilitation service supports the implementation of the State Government's health reform. It will incorporate contemporary health design including evidence based design and ecologically sustainable development.

Appian Group has established a dedicated project team to support the client in the management of the project briefing, design and procurement  including scoping and procurement of the furniture, fixtures and fittings.  Since August 2009 Appian Group's role has included:

  • Undertaking, in close cooperation with SMAHS, the clinical consultation required to understand  the functional and technical requirements for the project,
  • Preparing  the Project Brief in consultation with the client,
  • Investigating, reviewing and coordinating the impacts of the Rehabilitation project on the overall Fiona Stanley Hospital project, and
  • Coordinating all aspects of design management from inception through to the commencement of the Design Development stage.

The project is due for completion in late 2013.
