Project: Albany Health Campus

Client: WA Country Health Service (WACHS)

Procurement: Two Stage Early Contractor Involvement (Document and Construct)

Stage: ECI Design

Appian Group was engaged by the Office of Strategic Projects to provide the Project Management services for the Albany Health Campus project, encompassing all aspects of the project including contract development, governance, project controls, budget, client liaison, consultant management, tendering, award of contract and construction delivery.

The new purpose built $170 million Albany Health Campus will be the Regional Resource Centre for Western Australia’s Great Southern Region, with a gross floor area of over 20,000m2 (excluding car-parking).  Redeveloping the hospital site provides the opportunity for WA Country Health Services to meet the health reform and service delivery strategies identified in the several key Health Department policies and reports.

The existing hospital infrastructure is ageing and is no longer fit for purpose to provide the current models of health care or able to provide for future service demand.  The Hospital will provide the services and infrastructure required to deliver modern and innovative models of care for the Great Southern Region, in accordance with the service profile described in the WA Health Clinical Services Framework 2010-2020 and will include:

  • 132 beds (includes multi and same day beds);
  • New Tele-health facilities;
  • New surgical services centre;
  • Expanded cancer care centre;
  • Expanded mental health inpatient unit;
  • New maternity facilities;
  • Expand the high dependency unit and collocate with the emergency department;
  • Replace the medical, surgical and rehabilitation inpatient units;
  • Expand medical imaging facilities;
  • New pathology facilities;
  • Consolidate ambulatory care services in one Location;
  • Expanded pharmacy facilities;
  • Upgraded renal dialysis and chemotherapy services; and
  • Upgrade of critical engineering infrastructure.

The existing hospice building, dental clinic and hydrotherapy pool will be retained as part of the redevelopment of the campus.

The design of the Hospital will support private sector involvement in the delivery of some clinical and non clinical services.  These private service providers are being considered by WA Country Health Services as part of the health reform and service delivery strategies.

The Hospital will incorporate contemporary health design including evidence based design and ecologically sustainable development.  The Hospital will utilise many aspects of the design achieved on the Fiona Stanley Hospital.

Appian Group's project team is located in the client's project office in Perth as well as on site to ensure an ongoing collaborative approach to the project including the client and the contractor.

The project is commencing construction in early 2011 and is due for completion in late 2012 with the redeveloped campus opening to the public in early 2013.
